How to estimate how long an assignment will take
Most estimates fail because “do the assignment” hides several kinds of work.
Break it into stages
For a paper, separate reading, source selection, outline, drafting, revision, and submission. For a problem set, separate learning an unfamiliar method from solving routine questions. Add the stages you can name, then give each a rough time box.
Add a small buffer
Use a buffer for re-reading instructions, formatting, technical trouble, and transitions. A 20–30% buffer is a reasonable planning habit when the task is unfamiliar. It is not wasted time; it makes your daily target achievable.
Improve the next estimate
After submitting, compare the estimate with reality. Was the research slower? Did the first draft take less time? You do not need perfect tracking—one small adjustment makes the next week easier.
